BAGHDAD
— Iraqi National Police along with the 8th Brigade, 2nd Iraqi National Police Division completed a three-week-long project to emplace protective barriers around a large market in Sadr City allowing residents to shop at the market safely and securely.

Markets in Sadr City were the target of several car bomb attacks last year, leading to the demand for increased security measures.

The “Safe Markets” project involved placing more than 450 concrete barriers around the market, turning it into an open bazaar for pedestrians. The National Police had full operational control of the project, and the emplacement of the barriers was personally supervised by Brig. Gen. Ali Daboun, 8th INP Brigade commander.

Capt. Taylor Presley, a police transition team advisor, said the project will give shoppers at the market a sense of safety and security against the threat of car bomb attacks as well as prevent accidents caused by vehicles trying to move through the crowds.

“This was done because shopkeepers wanted safety for their customers,” Presley said.

The “Safe Markets” project is just one of several strategies being pursued to thwart terrorist attacks in the area. Checkpoints surrounding Sadr City manned by the Iraqi National Police have also been effective in reducing the car bomb threat over the last four months.
