Multi-National Corps – Iraq Public Affairs Office, Camp Victory APO AE 09342 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Release No. 20070610-14 June 10, 2007 Vigilant IPs prevent SVEST attacks in Baqouba Multinational Division – North PAO BAQOUBA, Iraq – Iraqi Police killed two insurgents wearing suicide vests at a checkpoint near an education facility in Baqouba, preventing dozens of casualties, June 9. The Iraqi Police station in Baqouba reported that at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, two men wearing suicide vests approached an IP checkpoint. When the first individual failed to yield to warnings IP shot the insurgent. This caused his vest to explode, injuring one IP, who later died of his wounds. The concussion of the first explosion detonated the second SVEST, and killed the other insurgent, there were no additional injuries to IPs or civilians. A third pedestrian wearing an SVEST was later killed in the same area. “I am proud of my IPs, as this means that they are doing their job correctly,” said Maj. Gen. Ghanem Al Qureshy, Provincial Director of Police for Diyala. “Just last week I passed through the checkpoint and stopped and talked with the IPs. I asked them to remain vigilant and ready for anything.
