Iraqi Government bolsters security in Samarra
Multi-National Division – North PAO

TIKRIT, Iraq –
More than 650 Iraqi Security Forces and a Coalition advisory team arrived in Samarra June 14, to bolster security near the Askira Mosque – also known as the Golden Dome.

Approximately 300 Iraqi Army soldiers from 4th Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division, 140 National Policemen from the 3rd Battalion, 3rd National Police, and 150 other National Policemen arrived in Samarra Thursday to reinforce security forces there.

“The Iraqi security forces responded very quickly to the bombing [Wednesday], and their quick actions have calmed tensions in Samarra,” said Lt. Col. Viet Luong, commander of 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, whose unit works with the Iraqi Security Forces in Samarra.  “The provincial governor and the prime minister both toured the site of the bombing and promised quick deployment of Iraqi forces.  Everything they promised has materialized so far.”

The two minarets were destroyed at around 9 a.m. June 13.  The incident is still under investigation by the local police.
