Div. Public Affairs Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO BAGHDAD — Soldiers with the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division detained six insurgents during Operation Council Grove II June 25 in an eastern section of the Iraqi capital.
The 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, based out of Fort Riley, Kan., was conducting targeted raids in the Kamaliyah neighborhood based on tips from residents in an attempt to root out insurgents and bring security to eastern Baghdad. “New Baghdad residents did the right thing and violence by a small minority will not speak for the majority of residents who want peace,” said Maj. Sean Ryan, a spokesperson for the 2nd IBCT. “Along with our partners, the Iraqi Security Forces, we will help the people any way we can.” While conducting combat operations, Soldiers witnessed two insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device. Soldiers engaged both insurgents, wounding them. They were transported for medical treatment by Iraqi National Police. Later in the evening, 2-16 Soldiers captured four more insurgents in two separate raids.
