2 terrorists killed, 8 suspects detained in Baghdad raids

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces killed two terrorists, detained eight suspected terrorists and uncovered several bomb caches during coordinated raids targeting the Baghdad bombing network Monday.

Using information gained from an operation June 15, Coalition Forces conducted a series of raids and captured a senior-level al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in the capital city.  During the raid, ground forces on the target location observed an individual maneuvering from the target building towards the ground forces providing security outside and around the target building.  Responding to the threat, Coalition Forces engaged the individual, killing him.

The ground forces detained two suspected terrorists for their alleged involvement with the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader.  Coalition Forces also destroyed two vehicles used in the transport of enemy personnel and weapons.

As the ground forces approached another targeted building, an armed man began firing on them from the backyard.  Coalition Forces, responding in self-defense, returned fire and killed the armed man.  One suspect was detained at the location.

When Coalition Forces raided two nearby buildings, they found multiple caches of improvised explosive device-making material, which they safely destroyed on site, along with a vehicle used in terrorist activities.  The ground forces detained six suspected terrorists for their alleged involvement in the Baghdad vehicle-borne IED network.

“Dismantling the suicide bombing network in Baghdad is a top priority for us,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson.  “We will continue to target al Qaeda and any groups that use vehicle-borne bombs to attack the Iraqi people.”
