Three killed, 22 wounded in Khalis market attack
Multi-National Division – North PAO

KHALIS, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces provided rapid emergency response when a market in the city of Khalis, northeast of Baqouba, was attacked with 16 mortar rounds, killing three local citizens and injuring an additional 22 Aug. 18.

Within moments of the attack, Iraqi Army soldiers from 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army, and Iraqi police arrived at the scene and transported the wounded citizens to the local Khalis Hospital and to another hospital in Bagdad.

“As the Iraqi Security Forces continue to train in contact, they are showing great improvements as they are able to unilaterally respond to attacks from al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations that continue to bring hatred and destruction to the people of Diyala,” said Col. David W. Sutherland, commander of Coalition Forces in Diyala province.

Approximately 1,000 citizens gathered around the mayor’s house to express their concerns in the aftermath of the attack.

“The attacks on the innocent people of this province will not be tolerated, and the peoples’ concern is another sign that they are growing tired of the callous acts of the terrorists,” Sutherland said.
