Prime Minister of Iraq Officiates at Detainee Release Ceremony

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki officiated a ceremony recognizing the planned release of almost 500 detainees during a morning ceremony at Camp Victory Thursday, delivering a message of national reconciliation and rejuvenation.

“If some ideas have infiltrated into our lives, you came out to show that with brotherhood, love and equality, we can renounce sectarianism and deter violence,” said the Prime Minister.

The ceremony marked the largest release of detainees under efforts by the Government of Iraq and Coalition forces to foster goodwill and reconciliation. Approximately 50 detainees are released daily, only after they are no longer deemed to be an immediate threat to Iraqi and Coalition forces, and the security of Iraq.

Detainees are routinely released through a review board process, where they have the opportunity to address their case personally. They also make a pledge to an Iraqi judge, swearing to maintain peace and good conduct.

While in detention, the detainees could volunteer for new programs that included basic education courses, religious discussions, vocational training and work programs.

Approximately one third of the detainees were released Thursday, while the remaining two-thirds will be released within the next several days.
