Sons of Iraq member turns in weapons cache

FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSU, Iraq – A member of the Sons of Iraq in Arab Jabour turned over a weapons cache to Coalition forces in the area March 11.

The man brought the cache to Soldiers of Company C, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, stationed at Patrol Base Hawkes.

The cache consisted of 12 anti-tank mines, six silencers, one 125 mm projectile, one 57 mm projectile, a 30-pound bag of homemade explosives and a two-liter bottle of HME.

All ordnances were destroyed in a controlled detonation by an explosive ordnance disposal team.

The removal of the cache helps improve security, not just for Soldiers but also for local residents, said 1st Lt. Timothy Williams, Company C executive officer.

“We’ve moved thousands of pounds of explosives out of Arab Jabour,” the Palm Bay, Fla., native, said.
