IA Soldiers take weapons off streets of Sadr City

Multi-National Division – Baghdad

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Army Soldiers continued their pledge to protect the population of Sadr City as they seized a number of weapons caches during Operation Peace May 26.
 
Iraqi Army soldiers from 3rd Brigade, 1st IA Division, discovered a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, an RPG round, a mortar sight, and one radio.  Soldiers from the same unit also found 15 IEDs, 19 60 mm mortar rounds, two 120 mm artillery rounds, three 80 mm mortar tubes, 200 80 mm charge  increments, 140 Dishka rounds, a 9 mm Berretta pistol, two 9 mm Glock pistols, 12 bricks of C4 explosive, 25 RPG rounds, two RPK rifles, a Siminov rifle, an SPG rocket, and 186 kilograms of TNT. 
 
In a later mission in a separate location, they seized two RPG launchers, eight RPG rounds, two anti-tank rockets, 200 meters of electrical wire, nine boxes of 7.62 mm rounds, seven six-inch sticks of TNT, a GC rifle, three GC magazines, two Iraqi flak vests, a set of Russian night-vision goggles, and a radio. 
 
Iraqi Army soldiers from this unit also found nine explosively formed projectiles, six RPG launchers, seven anti-tank rockets, an RPG round, 500 7.62 mm rounds, 160 meters of wire, six radios, 20 radio batteries, three battery chargers, and a rifle range target. 
 
In a separate operation, Soldiers from this unit seized two 155 mm artillery rounds, three improvised explosive devices, five AK-47s, 60 kilograms of TNT, 141 TNT tablets, 99 anti-tank mines, 11 60 mm mortar rounds, six grenades, four RPG rounds, a handmade grenade, an SPG rocket, a 100 mm tank round, and 150 14.5 mm rounds.
 
Iraqi Army soldiers from 34th Brigade, 9th IA Div. seized two explosively formed projectiles, two EFP plates, 13 IEDs, 87 88 mm mortar rounds, a 120 mm artillery round, two 80 mm mortar tubes, a pair of binoculars, four PKC rifles, 107 rounds of PKC ammo, and four anti-tank mines. 
 
Iraqi Army soldiers from this unit also searched the grounds of the Al Naldait Mosque and seized six EFPs, 13 hand grenades, three RPG rounds, three RPG propellants, an RPG scope, 19 AK-47 magazines, an SKS rifle, a bag of SKS ammo, an explosive material package, a hand-held radio, a PKC barrel, two sets of body armor, three anti-aircraft warheads, an anti-aircraft artillery round, and five 155 mm artillery rounds.
 
“The streets of Sadr City are safer through the continuous efforts of the Iraqi Army,” said Col. Allen Batschelet, Multi-National Division – Baghdad chief of staff. “Sadr City is not a safe haven for Special Groups. The Iraqi Army is committed to restoring the rule of law to this battle torn area.”
