Iraqi Security Forces target AQI VBIED networks, arrest 13

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces arrested 13 individuals during three joint security operations today targeting vehicle-borne improvised explosive device network members in areas between Kirkuk and Baghdad.

The 3rd Emergency Services Unit arrested a suspected member of the Kirkuk-based VBIED network in southern Kirkuk.  Based on a warrant, the suspect is allegedly linked to network members associated with the deadly June 20 VBIED attacks in Taza, which killed more than 90 people.

During the joint security operation, the 3rd ESU and U.S. advisors searched a building where the suspect was found and arrested. The 3rd ESU arrested an additional individual based on information found at the scene, associating the individual to the suspect.

Near Muqdadiyah, located approximately 90 km northeast of Baghdad, during a separate security operation, the 3rd General Directorate Salah ad-Din Police Unit and U.S. advisors arrested two individuals.  Acting on a warrant, the security team searched one building for a suspect who is an alleged financial associate of al-Qaeda in Iraq’s Diyala-based VBIED network.

After questioning several people in the building, the security team determined the suspect was not present. The security team arrested two individuals based on evidence found at the scene linking them to criminal activity.

During a third operation, ISF and U.S. advisors searched several buildings near Abu Gharayb for an individual suspected of manufacturing VBIEDs for the AQI terrorist organization.  During questioning, nine individuals were arrested based on statements made to the security team connecting them to the AQI network suspect.
