MULTI-NATIONAL FORCE-IRAQ PRESS DESK BAGHDAD, Iraq Press Release A091104x-01 November 4, 2009 3 arrested, 1 killed during search for foreign fighter cell leader BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces arrested three suspected foreign fighter cell members today while conducting a warranted joint security operation in a rural area located approximately 106 km northwest of Mosul. A fourth suspect was shot and killed during the operation. ISF and U.S. advisors searched one building located near the Iraq-Syria border based on a warrant issued for the arrest of a foreign fighter cell leader suspected of facilitating the transport of foreign terrorists into Iraq. Intelligence links the targeted foreign fighter network to the al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist organization. During the operation, the security team sequestered and questioned several individuals. Based on questioning conducted at the scene, four individuals were determined as suspected associates of the foreign fighter cell leader. One of the four suspects failed to comply with verbal instructions from the security team, became combative and presented an imminent threat to others. In response to the threat, U.S. Forces shot and killed the aggressor. Al Mumi officials responded to the scene to retrieve the suspect’s body.
