ISF arrest 8 in pursuit of al-Qaeda in Iraq members

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces arrested 8 suspects today while conducting three joint security operations in pursuit of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) members operating in northern Iraq.

In al-Jananiyah, located approximately 180 km northwest of Baghdad, ISF and U.S. advisors searched one building for a suspected AQI member allegedly involved in coordinating vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks and acquiring weapons for the al-Anbar AQI network.

During preliminary questioning and evidence gathered at the scene, ISF determined the identity of the targeted AQI member and arrested him and two of his suspected criminal accomplices.

In a separate security operation conducted in Rashidiyah, 9 km north of Mosul, the 3rd Federal Police Brigade and U.S. advisors searched one building for an alleged member of AQI involved in constructing IEDs used for attacks targeting civilians throughout the region.

During a preliminary investigation conducted by ISF on the premises, one person in the building tested positive for explosive residue and several grenades and handguns were found in the building.

Based on the evidence gathered at the scene, ISF identified three suspects associated with criminal activity and arrested them without incident.

During a third joint security operation conducted in a rural area located 100 km northeast of Baghdad, Iraqi Police and U.S. advisors searched several buildings for a suspected AQI member involved in procuring vehicles for use in VBIED attacks in the region.

Based on evidence found at the scene, Iraqi Police arrested two individuals suspected engaging in criminal activity.
