MNC-I statement on Mahmudiyah investigation

BAGHDAD — In two incidents involving soldiers from Company B, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, past media reporting suggested a possible connection between the deaths of Spec. David Babineau, Pfc. Thomas Tucker and Pfc. Kristian Menchaca and the rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and killing of her family in Mahmudiyah, allegedly by Soldiers from the same unit.  Past articles could be read to imply that the three deceased Soldiers were somehow involved in the alleged crimes.

The criminal investigation into the crimes committed against the Iraqi family in Mahmudiyah is still on-going and comment on the investigation would be inappropriate.  Thus far, however, no evidence has been discovered implicating Babineau, Tucker or Menchaca in any criminal involvement with the Mahmudiyah incident.

After a June 16 attack on the Soldiers’ position, a quick reaction force responded to the scene.  Upon arrival, the QRF found Babineau dead; Menchaca and Tucker were missing and their bodies were found three days later.  Our deepest sympathies and prayers remain with the families of these fallen Patriots.
