ISF provides security for millions of Iraqi citizens during 12th Imam celebration

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces successfully provided security for more than four million Shiite pilgrims Sept. 8-9 during the celebration of the birth of the Shabani, or 12th Imam, in Baghdad’s Karbala province.
The ISF independently set up and operated checkpoints throughout the Babil, Karbala and Najaf provinces, ensuring the safe passage of the pilgrims moving to Karbala for the celebration.
“The success of the Shabani highlights the continued progress of not only the coordinated efforts of the security forces within the provinces of Karbala, Babil and Najaf, but the coordinated effort of the three provinces combined,” said Lt. Col. Matthew Elledge, executive officer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
The ISF manning checkpoints throughout the three provinces thwarted several terrorist attacks, seized several large weapons caches and detained multiple terrorist suspects.
The security forces seized 111 AK-47 assault rifles, 302 hand grenades, 17 pistols, four RPK rifles, three PKC machineguns, three rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 20 sets of body armor, and detained 25 suspected terrorists.
Along with Ashura and Arba’een earlier this year, tens of millions of Iraqis have been able to celebrate and practice their religious beliefs without harm throughout Baghdad and Iraq.
“The security operations of this event are another example of the increasing capabilities of the Iraqi Security Forces as they take on more responsibility for the safety and security of their countrymen,” said Elledge.
