MND-B Soldiers detain 49 suspected terrorists

BAGHDAD, Iraq
– Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers detained 49 suspected terrorists and confiscated several weapons caches during combat operations Wednesday and Friday in Baghdad.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained seven terrorist suspects and seized a small weapons cache at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday after searching a dump truck at a checkpoint north of Mahmudiyah.

Upon searching the vehicle, they found five of the suspects hiding in the back and seized two PKC rifles, two AK-47 assault rifles with 20 fully-loaded magazines of ammunition, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, two pistols, three grenades and 15 sets of body armor.

The suspects were detained for further questioning.

On Wednesday, Soldiers from 3rd Bn., 67th Armor Regt., 4th BCT, 4th Inf. Div., stopped a truck while on patrol and found 29 AK-47 assault rifles, two RPG rounds, two grenades and a sniper rifle.

The Soldiers also detained 15 suspected terrorists for questioning.

In a separate incident, Soldiers from Company A, 3rd Bn., 67th Armor Regt., stopped two separate convoys, confiscated numerous weapons and detained 25 suspected terrorists in east Baghdad Wednesday.

The Soldiers confiscated 42 AK-47 assault rifles, 165 AK-47 magazines, two Tabuk rifles with scopes, a Thompson submachine gun, six 9mm pistols, seven RPG launchers, 25 RPG rounds and propellants, two tandem RPG rounds, 14 hand grenades, a RPD machine gun, two PKM machine guns and two RPK machine guns.

On another patrol Wednesday, Soldiers from 1st Bn., 66th Armor Regt., 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div., detained one suspected terrorist during offensive operations north of Baghdad.           

Soldiers from Co. A, 1st Bn., 66th Armor Regt., searched a home and found four AK-47 assault rifles with magazines and pistols.

The patrol detained a man claiming to be a weapons dealer after searching his home.

A patrol from 2nd Tank Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division, detained a suspected terrorist during combat operations north of Baghdad at approximately 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The patrol cordoned and searched a house and detained a suspected terrorist.

As of Friday, Iraqi Security Forces and MND-B have cleared approximately 49,000 buildings, 50 mosques and 40 muhallas, detained more than 80 terrorist suspects, seized more than 1,100 weapons, registered more than 400 weapons and found 29 weapons caches. The combined forces have also replaced more than 1,000 doors, 35 windows and 1,350 locks damaged during clearing operations and have removed more than 87,700 cubic meters of trash from the streets of Baghdad.
