Iraqi brigade conducting operation near KirkukMulti-National Division – North PAO

KIRKUK, Iraq – More than 1,000 Iraqi soldiers began conducting a military operation Nov. 15 to clear several villages of possible insurgents and unauthorized weapons near Iraq’s northern city of Kirkuk.

The 2nd Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division, combined with two additional Iraqi battalions and Coalition Forces in support, began a cordon and search of the Zytoon and Rashad valleys approximately 40 kilometers south of Kirkuk.  Insurgent forces are reported to be operating within these areas.

The village of Dugmat, in the Rashad valley was the recent site of an attack on a combined Iraqi and Coalition patrol.

The commander of the 2nd IA Brigade, Maj. Gen. Anwar Hamed Amin and his primary staff led in the planning, execution, and coordination of the operation.  Coalition Forces from the 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division based out of Forward Operating Base Warrior in Kirkuk are providing air and artillery support for the operation.

Upon completion of the operation, the 2nd IA Brigade plans to maintain a formal presence in the area to protect the civilians and deny the AIF any sanctuary in southern parts of the Kirkuk Province.
